HOW USA CAN ADVANCE
The 2026 World Cup uses a new 48-team format. Here's exactly what the USMNT needs to do to reach the knockout rounds, updated as Group D plays out.
USA sit 1st in Group D with 3 points
- → As things stand, the USA would advance. 2 games left to lock it in.
- → A win in the next match would move the USA to 6 points and into a strong position for the top two.
- → Goal difference could become the tiebreaker, so margins matter — not just results.
The 2026 Format, Explained
For the first time, 48 nations are split into 12 groups of four. The USA is in Group D with Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye.
The top two from every group (24 teams) plus the eight best third-place finishers move on to a new Round of 32 knockout stage.
Each team plays three group matches. The USA's are against Paraguay (Jun 12), Australia (Jun 19), and Türkiye (Jun 25).

The Third-Place Lifeline
Finishing third in Group D is not the end of the road. Across the 12 groups there are 12 third-place teams, and the eight best of them also reach the Round of 32. Those eight are ranked by points first, then goal difference, then goals scored.
That makes every goal matter. A third-place USA team that wins or draws a game, and keeps its goal difference healthy, has a real chance of sneaking through. Sitting deep and losing 3-0 is very different from losing 1-0 when the third-place table is this tight.
